How it works
FBI Background Check + Apostille — step by step
Walk through the full process before diving into the FAQ below.
General
Monument Visa Service is a professional document assistance company based in Fairfax, VA. We help individuals obtain FBI background checks and have them and multiple other documents apostilled through the US Department of State & Washington D.C Secretary of State Apostille office — handling the entire process on your behalf so you don't have to navigate federal agencies alone.
Anyone applying for a visa, residency, work permit, or citizenship in a foreign country may be required to submit an FBI background check with an apostille. It is also commonly needed for international adoptions, teaching abroad, or any official immigration process.
An apostille is an official certification issued by the US Department of State / Secretary of State that authenticates the legitimacy of a document so it is legally recognized in foreign countries. Countries that are members of the Hague Convention (1961) accept apostilles in place of lengthy embassy or consulate certifications.
Yes — that's exactly what we do. Once we receive your fingerprints and completed application, we submit everything to the FBI on your behalf. After you receive and save your background check, you can then apply for the apostille process through our apostille order form and we will have the FBI processed with the US Department of State, and ship the final documents directly to you.
Fingerprinting / Getting FBI Background Check
You have two options depending on where you are located:
Local to Fairfax, VA? Schedule a live scan appointment directly at our office. It's quick, clean, and eliminates the need for mailing anything.
Outside the area? Visit a local police station to get your fingerprints inked on a fingerprint card, then mail the cards to our Fairfax office.

Our Fairfax office offers live scan appointments — the fastest and easiest option if you're nearby.
The FBI requires standard FD-258/FD-1164 inked fingerprint cards. These are available at most local police departments, sheriff's offices, and third-party fingerprinting providers. Make sure all ten fingers are clearly and completely inked before mailing.
Mail your completed FD-258/FD-1164 fingerprint cards to our Fairfax, VA office at 3925 Blenheim Blvd STE 53B Fairfax VA, 22030.

Just two things: your completed Monument Visa application (Available Here) and your fingerprints — either via live scan at our office or inked fingerprint cards mailed to us. That's it. We handle everything else from there.
Once we submit your fingerprints and application to the FBI, your background check is typically issued within 24 to 48 hours. You will receive it directly via email from the FBI.
The FBI sends your background check directly to you and only you via email. Monument Visa does not receive a copy of your background check.
As soon as you receive the email, download and save the background check as a PDF file to your computer or phone. Do not delay — this is critical.
The FBI sends this document only once. If you lose access to the email or fail to save the file, you will need to restart the entire process. Save your PDF immediately.
Occasionally the FBI may reject fingerprints due to poor print quality. If this happens, we will notify you and guide you through the process of getting re-fingerprinted and resubmitting. This is more common with inked cards than with live scan — another reason we recommend the live scan option when possible.
Apostille
Once you have your FBI background check as a PDF or original hard copy, head to our apostille order form here. Fill in your personal information, upload your PDF directly through the form or select you will be mailing us your original, and select your preferred processing speed. That's all — we handle the rest.
No. Because the FBI issues background checks as certified digital PDF files, you can upload yours directly to our apostille order form. No printing, scanning, or mailing required on your end.
This is one of the key advantages of the FBI's digital issuance system — the entire apostille process can be done digitally through Monument Visa.
All FBI background check apostilles are issued exclusively by the US Department of State. Monument Visa submits your order and coordinates the process through the Department of State on your behalf.
Yes. As soon as we receive your apostille order and verify that everything is complete, we will send you an email confirmation letting you know your order is in good standing and that we have everything we need to proceed.
The apostille is accepted by all countries that are signatories to the Hague Convention of 1961 — which includes the majority of countries worldwide that require background checks for immigration or residency purposes. If you are unsure whether your destination country accepts apostilles, we recommend checking with the relevant embassy or consulate.
